Balance… is it possible?
Balancing the demanding worlds of competitive CrossFit, a thriving career, and a fulfilling family life is a juggling act that requires not just commitment but a strategic approach to time management and priorities. My journey as a Masters Athlete, entrepreneur, and family man has taught me that excellence in one area often demands an intentional imbalance, where focus and dedication temporarily tip the scales to achieve greatness.
Embracing Imbalance to Achieve Greatness
To excel in any field, whether it's becoming a top-level competitive CrossFit athlete, a successful business owner, or a devoted family member, requires an acceptance that balance is not about equal portions but about prioritizing what matters most at different times. It's about understanding that to be exceptional, you must sometimes allow your life to become unbalanced, focusing intensely on your goals while ensuring the support and understanding of your loved ones.
The Role of Family in Your Journey
A supportive family is the backbone of any successful athlete. Their understanding and encouragement are crucial as you navigate the demands of training, competitions, and recovery. It's essential to communicate openly about your goals, the time commitment required, and how it impacts family life. This support system not only provides emotional strength but also practical help, enabling you to focus on your training and competitions.
Time Management: Organize, Prioritize, Execute
Effective time management is non-negotiable. Here's how you can be more organized and efficient across all facets of your life:
Set Clear Priorities: Use principles from Greg McKeown's Essentialism to distinguish between what is truly essential and what can be delegated or eliminated. This clarity helps focus your energy on what directly contributes to your goals.
Explore and Evaluate: Regularly assess all opportunities and commitments to determine which are most aligned with your goals. Say yes only to what truly matters.
Eliminate the Non-Essential: Courageously cut out activities and commitments that do not contribute to your overarching goals in CrossFit, career, and family life.
Execute Effortlessly: By focusing on the essential, create a structured plan that allows for smooth execution of tasks, minimizing stress and maximizing efficiency.
The Power of a Pause: Before committing to new obligations, take a moment to consider their impact on your current priorities and goals, ensuring you remain focused on what's truly important.
Build Effective Habits: Drawing from James Clear's Atomic Habits, establish routines that automate progress towards your goals. Small, consistent actions in training, work, and family life accumulate to significant achievements over time.
Make It Obvious: Design your environment to make good habits in training and recovery obvious and easy to start. This could mean setting out your training gear the night before or scheduling specific times for workouts.
Make It Attractive: Bundle a habit you need to do with one you want to do to make it more appealing. For example, listen to your favorite podcast only while training or preparing healthy meals.
Make It Easy: Reduce the friction associated with good habits. Prep meals in advance, have a set workout schedule, and minimize the steps it takes to start any positive habit.
Make It Satisfying: Use positive reinforcement to make good habits stick. Track your progress, celebrate small wins, and treat yourself for consistent efforts in training, work, and family engagements.
Cultivate Grit: Angela Duckworth's Grit emphasizes the power of passion and perseverance. Apply this by setting long-term goals for CrossFit, work, and personal life, and pursue them with unwavering commitment.
Passion and Perseverance: Understand that long-term success in CrossFit, career, and family life comes from a deep-seated passion and the perseverance to push through challenges.
Practice Deliberately: Focus on continuous improvement through deliberate practice. This means setting specific goals, receiving immediate feedback, and concentrating on technique and improvement areas.
Purpose: Connect your efforts to a larger purpose. Whether it's inspiring others, achieving personal goals, or contributing to your family's well-being, finding the 'why' behind your actions can fuel persistence.
Hope: Cultivate a growth mindset that views challenges as opportunities for growth. Embrace setbacks as part of the learning process and never lose sight of your ability to improve.
Be Fully Present: Whether you're at the gym, at work, or with family, give your full attention to the task or people at hand. This focused presence ensures quality time and effort, maximizing the impact of each moment.
Focused Attention: Whether you're in the gym, at work, or spending time with family, practice mindfulness by focusing fully on the task or interaction at hand.
Quality Over Quantity: In a world that glorifies busyness, choose to spend quality, focused time on each aspect of your life, ensuring that when you are present, you're making the most of those moments.
Mindful Listening: In conversations, whether with family, colleagues, or coaches, listen with full attention, showing that you value their input and presence.
Disconnect to Connect: Make conscious decisions to disconnect from distractions, particularly digital ones, to engage more deeply with your immediate environment and the people in it.
Practical Tips for Balancing CrossFit, Career, and Family
Schedule and Plan: Allocate specific times for training, work, and family. Use a planner or app to manage your schedule effectively, ensuring you dedicate uninterrupted time to each.
Communicate and Involve: Keep your family and work colleagues in the loop about your training and competition schedules. Their support and understanding can make managing these commitments smoother.
Quality Over Quantity: Make the time spent in each area of your life count. That means engaging fully in workouts, being productive at work, and cherishing moments with family.
Rest and Recovery: Recognize that rest is just as important as activity. Adequate sleep, rest days, and mental health breaks are crucial for sustaining long-term performance in all areas of life.
Seek Efficiency: In training, focus on high-quality, targeted workouts over long, unfocused sessions. At work, apply the 80/20 rule, focusing on tasks that yield the most significant results. With family, plan activities that allow quality bonding time.
Embrace Flexibility: Be prepared to adjust your plans as life throws unexpected challenges. Flexibility allows you to maintain progress without becoming overwhelmed by changes.
Balancing the pursuit of becoming a competitive CrossFit athlete with maintaining a career and family life is challenging but achievable. It requires a supportive network, effective time management, and a focus on what truly matters. By applying these strategies and embracing the journey's demands, you can achieve excellence across the board, proving that with determination and discipline, you can indeed have it all.
