Every year, like clockwork, it happens. The moment right before the Open workout begins—my stomach tightens, my heart races, and that familiar feeling creeps in: nerves. Yes, even after 12 years of competing and five CrossFit Games championships, I still get nervous. But here’s the difference… I’m not uncertain anymore. I’m confident. Not because I think I’ll win, but because I know I’m ready.
That wasn’t always the case. In the beginning, I was just a guy in class trying to outscore Jeff and Steve, pushing myself to see what I was capable of. Now? The Open is a fun and competitive stepping stone on the road to the CrossFit Games. But it still carries the same excitement, the same adrenaline, and the same valuable lessons every single year.
